Masonic Cancer Center Scholar

Our cancer project will be supporting Dr. Helen Parsons, Masonic Scholar at Masonic Cancer Center at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Parsons is a recently recruited faculty member to the School of Public Health. She has a research interest in cancer survivorship. She works in both adult, pediatric, and adolescent populations and was recruited to help in this area. Cancer survivorship and cancer prevention are intimately linked. Drs. Neglia and Turcotte's work have shown that among those at highest risk for cancer are those with previous history of cancer. Per Dr. Douglas Yee, Director, Masonic Cancer Center: In my field of breast cancer, all of the prevention strategies we've developed have come from the study of cancer survivors. She hopes to receive a new grant from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society on pediatric cancer survivorship. She works closely with Drs. Turcotte and Blaes, both previous OES scholars.

Order of the Eastern Star Cancer Research Endowment Fund

The OES Cancer Research Endowment Fund at the University of Minnesota Masonic Cancer Center was established by WGM Rita Glazebrook and WGP Dale Seubert and adopted as a Minnesota Grand Chapter Project in 1994-1995. The University of Minnesota Foundation provides oversight of the fund, which was created to generate annual income for cancer research and bring ongoing recognition to the Order of the Eastern Star by providing a lasting legacy of support for cancer research and treatment.

Fourth year fellows, physicians who are also academic scientists, are eligible to compete for an award given annually from this fund. Awards are designed to supplement funding received from other sources and focus on translating research to clinical care to patients with cancer. Over the past 25 years nearly $200,000 has been awarded to support cancer research.

Donations to the OES Cancer Research Endowment Fund may be received at any time and sent to:
