Masonic Cancer Center Scholar

Our cancer project will be supporting Dr. Erin Marcotte, OES Scholar at Masonic Cancer Center at the University of Minnesota.  Erin's research involves childhood cancers, specifically childhood leukemia and a liver cancer called hepatoblastoma. Her work in leukemia is exceptional. She is looking at ways of identifying children who have a high likelihood of developing all forms of cancer.

Dr. Marcotte is an Associate Professor in the Division of Epidemiology and Clinical Research, specializing in pediatric cancer epidemiology. She earned her PhD in Epidemiology from the University of California, Los Angeles, after completing her undergraduate studies at Davidson College.

Dr. Marcotte’s research focuses on development and application of innovative methods to detect leukemia translocations in newborn dried blood spots, racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in childhood cancer incidence and outcomes, genetic and molecular risk factors for hepatoblastoma, and late effects of treatment among hepatoblastoma survivors. Her work is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Defense (DoD), and Children's Cancer Research Fund.

Dr. Marcotte serves as Vice Chair of the Children’s Oncology Group Epidemiology Committee, co-Chair of the Epidemiology and Outcomes Network of the International Society of Pediatric Oncology, and is an active member of the Childhood Cancer and Leukemia International Consortium.

Order of the Eastern Star Cancer Research Endowment Fund

The OES Cancer Research Endowment Fund at the University of Minnesota Masonic Cancer Center was established by WGM Rita Glazebrook and WGP Dale Seubert and adopted as a Minnesota Grand Chapter Project in 1994-1995. The University of Minnesota Foundation provides oversight of the fund, which was created to generate annual income for cancer research and bring ongoing recognition to the Order of the Eastern Star by providing a lasting legacy of support for cancer research and treatment.

Fourth year fellows, physicians who are also academic scientists, are eligible to compete for an award given annually from this fund. Awards are designed to supplement funding received from other sources and focus on translating research to clinical care to patients with cancer. Over the past 25 years nearly $200,000 has been awarded to support cancer research.

Donations to the OES Cancer Research Endowment Fund may be received at any time and sent to:
